Life at Bethany Home ~ school for special children...

Have been working as a volunteer at Bethany Home for 6 weeks in May and June 2011...I have learned a lot, especially in dealing with those special children...Bethany Home is a home for special children of intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, Down Syndrome, hearing and visual impairment and also slow learners.

Here are some of my activities over there:
  • All children will go for a morning walk at 8:30am and we, teachers and volunteers will guide them.

  • They will be doing morning exercises inside a small hall for 15 minutes after the 15 minutes morning walk.
  • At 9:00am, they will be having class as what normal children will do.
Class Hours

During the class hours, there are many activities that those children will carry out. For example, 'gotong-royong' (cleaning job), physiotherapy, games, sport and swimming.

As I becoming volunteer here as a part of my course work, of course i will do something that related to my profession. i have carried out anthropometry measurement for students that have been selected from knowledge sampling. i have measured their height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), and skinfold thickness for body fat percentage estimation.
Searching for the site for subscapular skinfold measurement.
Searching for the site for Triceps skinfold measurement.
I have also carried out some measurement of body fat percentage estimation, waist-hip ratio, BMI, and Total Daily Energy Expenditure for some staff and volunteers that were interested in knowing their health condition. Some suitable advises have been given following the measurements.

I also have conducted a small talk about Healthy Eating and Wise Consumer with my partner to all the staff at Bethany Home. We exposed them to the latest Malaysian Food Pyramid, food labelling, and food variety.

There are a lots of activities conducted by Bethany Home for all the children as well as staff and volunteers working there. for example, trip to concerts, handicamp, and outing.
I met one of my uni. friend at Shiny Black Gold musical sketch
We attending a choir performed by German Youth Choir with children there.
I have became a volunteers at Cutie-Cutie Handicamp held by Bethany Home, located at Cameron Highland. In that camp, each of us, the volunteers, is assigned with a kid which we have to take care of the for that three days and two night camp.
I have learne a lot and realized that, those special children are just like us, they need what a normal child needs, that is love and care from us.

Games for children in the camp. they seemed enjoy it very much !!!

We went to butterfly farm. Kids are attracted with those strange insects and reptiles.
